Enniskillen Yacht Club CHARITABLE TRUST news
Background
ENNISKILLEN YACHT CLUB CHARITABLE TRUST, Annual Distribution of Awards took place this year in the Devenish Room, Killyhevlin Hotel, Enniskillen, on Wednesday 4th May at 7.30pm.
The Chairman Mr John McCrea welcomed the EYCCT Trustees, the Fleming Bursary recipients and those recipients from Fermanagh Clubs and Organisations who were awarded Grant Aid. He also welcomed Mrs Helen Thompson who has taken over from Mrs Jean Boyd, in the role of Clerk to the Trustees of Enniskillen Yacht Club Charitable Trust. The Chairman gave a brief description of the origin of the Enniskillen Yacht Club Charitable Trust and the Fleming Bursary Awards, as follows: The former ENNISKILLEN YACHT CLUB was founded during 19th Century for competition sailing and also for recreational purposes on Lough Erne, it was based in Enniskillen and had its headquarters in East Bridge Street. The quite extensive buildings provided Reading rooms, Billiard Room and a Dining area with a Bar and facilities for overnight accommodation in the premises. It was a thriving social centre for many years, however in the 1950s the access to Lower Lough Erne became very restricted for sailing boats because of the construction of the Barrage at Portora. As a result of this construction work a new Sailing Club, known as Lough Erne Yacht Club was established at Killadeas and many of the Enniskillen Yacht Club members joined the new Lough Erne Yacht Club. The end result was that by the 1980’s the Enniskillen Yacht Club membership had been reduced to a very small number and sadly the decision was made to close the Club, sell the premises in East Bridge Street, and form a Charitable Trust. Nine new Trustees were appointed and EYCCT was formally launched at an inaugural dinner in the Killyhevlin Hotel in October 1987. We are very pleased to have three of the original members in our presence here tonight, Mr R Eadie, Mr R McFarland and Mr R McCullagh. The proceeds from the sale of the Enniskillen Yacht Club property were invested and each year for the past 29 years and including this year, the Enniskillen Yacht Club Charitable Trust has continued to fulfill its commitment by making awards annually to Schools, Clubs, Sailing and Water Based Groups in Fermanagh, and to Applicants and Groups whom our Trustees consider fulfill the objectives of the Trust and would benefit from financial support. |
NEWSHORACE FLEMING BURSARY AWARDS. In 1999, approximately 12 years after the Trust was established sadly one of our Founder Members Mr Horace Fleming died. He was an extremely well qualified Physician, a very well respected gentleman, and an all round sportsman including Golf, and Fishing but he had a passion for sailing and the Trustees thought it very fitting that his memory be marked by establishing an annual Bursary which would give young persons the opportunity to take part in outdoor activities, with an introduction to sailing (his passion) and also canoeing, and a variety of shore based activities including rock climbing and orienteering. Today this Bursary has become very popular, it offers a 4 night Residential at the Share Discovery Village, Lisnaskea, usually taking place the first or second week of August. Each year we have tremendous feedback from the Recipients, and tonight three Recipients from last year, namely Grace Whaley, Odhran Mahon and Eve Pedersen returned to give a very entertaining and informative account of the water-based activities and other skills in which they gained much knowledge and experience during their Residential. Such invaluable information is of great benefit to this year’s Recipients. Presentations were made to each Recipient by the Chairman Mr John McCrea. Ten Fleming Bursaries offering a 4night/5day residential in August this year, in which they take part in sailing, canoeing and shore-based activities including rock climbing and orienteering etc, at Share Discovery Village, Lisnaskea, were awarded to: Jena McDermott, Ruth Corrigan, Ciara Killalea, Ronain Maguire, Iseult Finn-O’Connor, Isaac Johnston, Blaise Carty, Adam McGovern, Cassie Maguire and Erin O’Donnell |
